Gender inequality persists in every country and shapes opportunities and outcomes for women, men and people of all gender identities. Gender is a crucial factor in shaping the economies, governance and stability of nations around the world (Ban Ki-Moon, 2014), and as such is critical to Australia’s national interests. Further, considering how gender intersects with other factors such as age, disability, rural/urban location and socio-cultural background is essential to understanding the broader factors shaping economic, social and political development.

Although Australia was once a leader internationally in gendered education policy, there are no current overarching national policies that focus on gender in education in Australia. Policies have become selective, such as the current focus on STEM, without deeper consideration of longer-term implications. The lack of interest in education policies for women and girls impacts not only on policy per se but also impacts negatively on research, including research funding.

A High Price to Pay: The Economic Case for Preventing Violence Against Women

This report demonstrates that the cost of violence against  women to society remains high and is increasing. At the same  time, there are significant potential cost savings and other  economic and social benefits to be gained from primary  prevention strategies that improve equality in relationships  and society.

Advocacy for safety and empowerment: State of knowledge paper

This paper analyses critical, policy, service and research literature on responses to Aboriginal women experiencing family and domestic violence in Australia; focusing on non-legal and non-clinical services and women’s specialist services in regional and remote settings. As a critical review, the paper highlights problems in using ideas of “effectiveness” and “success” to drive objectives in service delivery; and seeks to re-centre aspirations for empowerment alongside those for safety.

Women’s Health Victoria Clearinghouse

Women’s Health Victoria is a not-for-profit organisation focussed on improving the lives of Victorian women. WHV undertake strategic health promotion and advocacy to improve women’s health,and provide a number of direct services.  The WHV Clearinghouse is an information service and library that supports the work of Women’s Health Victoria, and builds the capacity of others to incorporate a gendered approach to health.  The Clearinghouse specialises in women’s health policy, health promotion, preventative health, health determinants, and advocacy in the Australian and Victorian context.
