WOMEN WITH DISABILITIES
Why is the health of women with disabilities an issue?
Women with disabilities experience high rates of poverty, are over-represented in institutional care, and experience difficulties in accessing health system services (Salthouse 2005). Women with disabilities face multiple types of discrimination and are often more disadvantaged than men with disabilities in similar circumstances. Women with disabilities are often denied equal enjoyment of their human rights, in particular by virtue of the lesser status ascribed to them by tradition and custom, or as a result of overt or covert discrimination (UN CESCR 2005).
