ABORIGINAL AND TORRES STRAIT ISLANDER WOMEN

Why is the health of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Women an issue?

The Australian Women’s Health Network recognises Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people as First Nation traditional owners and custodians of country throughout Australia, and their continuing connection to land, sea and community. We pay our respects to them and their cultures, and to elders both past and present.

When compared with other women in Australia, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women are considered the most socially and economically disadvantaged and have the poorest health status.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women have a right to determine for themselves what their health system will look like. If they continue to have their sense of identity marginalised and eroded, they will continue to have the poorest health of any group of women in Australian society.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women experience the poorest health outcomes of any group of women in Australian society, and have a right to determine what their health system will look like. This strategy has been developed through extensive consultation with over 400 ATSI women during 2009-2010. It is intended to supplement other national and state/territory identified priorities and needs. Recommendations are grouped into four action areas: supportive environments; health service access and equity; women in the health workforce; and appointment of a national policy officer to implement the strategy.

This paper analyses critical, policy, service and research literature on responses to Aboriginal women experiencing family and domestic violence in Australia; focusing on non-legal and non-clinical services and women’s specialist services in regional and remote settings. As a critical review, the paper highlights problems in using ideas of “effectiveness” and “success” to drive objectives in service delivery; and seeks to re-centre aspirations for empowerment alongside those for safety.

In 1996 over 40,000 Australian women were invited  take part in a long term project which would survey  the health of women across the nation, over time.   The participants were selected in three age cohorts:  younger women aged 18-23, mid-age women aged  45-50, and older women aged 70-75. These groups  were deliberately chosen in order to recruit women  before they passed through major turning points in  women’s lives. With eight years of change now tracked in the  surveys, the study is providing insights into major  trends in the lives of Australian women.
